Swindon league triumphs in challenge match!

Monday, May 4th, 2009

This year the inter-league challenge match followed a different format.  The top ladies team from the Swindon & District League (Ramsbury) met the top ladies from the Chippenham league (Bradford on Avon) and the top men  (Pewsey and Chippenham) battled it out for the honour of being the top league in North Wilts.

The Swindon league claimed the shields after Ramsbury ladies  (Amelia Tester, Kath More, Caryl Roberts & Kathryn Graham) won by 3 matches to one.

The men’s was much closer.  Jon Gregory, Rob Guthrie, Jack Darvell and Dan Casey drew 2-2 with Chippenham but won both championship tie breaks to clinch the match.

Well done to both teams for keeping us on top!

Winter league - views welcome

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

I have had a couple of comments about matches scheduled for the Sunday before Christmas and also the first Sunday matches in the New year not being until 18th January so next Winter we will try and start one week earlier still have a 3 week Christmas/New Year break and get the New Year starting earlier by one week too.  That should also give us an extra week to play postponed matches at the end of the season. Any views on this will be appreciated.

In the bleak midwinter…

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

If your home matches start at 10am or 10.30am at the weekends and you have trouble with iced up courts why not contact your opponents and suggest putting the start back an hour or so to give the courts time to thaw?  It saves all that standing around in the cold.

Winter League

Monday, September 1st, 2008

The 2008-9 Winter League has just started.  Malcolm Gayfer has taken over the running of the league from Roger Henry. He is happy to accept scanned results sheets by e-mail (they must be signed by both captains) if this is easier, though of course he will also accept results by post. Whichever method you use, please send results in promptly.

League Presentation Evening - Saturday 18th Oct

Monday, September 1st, 2008

This year Purton Tennis Club will be offering something different with a more upmarket approach.  Tickets will be £22.50 each but will offer extremely good value for money.  The evening will  begin with a live Jazz Band during pre-dinner drinks and they will continue to play throughout the 3 course meal which will be served to you at your table.  The quiz, which has become a regular feature in recent years, is being dropped but  instead there is a new “surprise feature”  which will be an opportunity for plenty of laughs whilst still testing your brain power!  As ever there’ll be a lively finale with the opportunity to dance the night away with a brilliant disco through to midnight. The Purton Committee feels that the evening is all about recognising and rewarding the successful players and all the teams from Division 9 to the very top divisions and the first part of the evening will be dedicated to this and all winners and runners up are encouraged to be present to celebrate their success.  In addition winning teams will be photographed together with their trophy.   The photos will then get a full year’s exposure on the league web site - so make sure you come smartly dressed!
