History

A meeting was held on 17th January 1977 at Wills Sports Club to form a competitive tennis league in the Swindon area. The meeting was attended by Mr Bob Clanchy (President of Wiltshire LTA) and his daughter Penny (until recently Secretary of Wiltshire LTA) and representatives of Aldbourne, British Rail, Burmah Oil, Highworth, Marlborough, Pewsey, Purton, Ridgeway, Ramsbury, Wills and Dorcan Tennis Clubs. It was agreed to form leagues for Mens and Mixed Doubles but there was not thought to be enough support for a women’s Section. The first matches were played on Monday 2nd May, 1977 and Swindon Hardcourts were the first winners of the Men’s and Mixed leagues. A Ladies division was set up in 1978 and the joint winners in that first year were Wills and Wootton Bassett.

These days we have around 24 clubs entering almost 150 teams in 19 divisions. There are Men’s, Ladies’ and Mixed sections.  Our season starts at the beginning of May and runs through the summer to the end of July.  Teams consist of 2 pairs who each play 4 sets making 8 sets in a match. Each team in the division plays each other home and away.

We have a Presentation Dinner, usually in November, where trophies are presented to all division winners.

More recently we have taken over the running of a Winter League.  This is for mixed teams and runs from October through to March.

Summer League Records have been compiled going back to 1991, though we hope to extend these back to the start of the league.  Please see the League Records page for further details.
